Ways to Beat the Workplace Blues

Always you have been told that work is a curse;
But I say to you that when you work
You fulfill a part of the earth’s furthest dream
Assigned to you when that dream was born.

~ Taken from ‘The Prophet’ by Kahlil Gibran

This may well not be the case with most people if a new Australian study has to be believed, around one in six cases of depression can be seen among working people and it is caused by stress at their workplace. The number seems to be slightly higher for women, with them coming in at 17% as opposed to the men who come in at 13%.

The US department of health claims that it saw around 70% of complaints related to work related stress causinhow to deal with workplace depressiong havoc in people’s mental, emotional and physical well-being.

Like they say, no problem was created without a solution. The trick is to finding it. Perhaps you could keep these quickies in mind the next time you see the monstrous stress building up on you; little-by-little.

Quitting Ain’t Fitting

Think about it, if you quit you might actually feel worse about things. Why? Because you’ll have all the time in the world to think about how much you hated that job, or how that boss got the better of you; so on and so forth. This will get coupled with the anxiety of how those next month’s bills are going to be taken care of. Plus, you’ll be free to sit at home, but with no one to talk to, because everyone else is going to be at work.

Tip # 1 – Calming Techniques to the Rescue

The best part about most calming techniques is that you can zone into them when your boss is giving you one of those numerous ‘why isn’t this done as yet’ sessions.

Picture this, your boss tells you that he’s hired a woman half your age to be your reporting boss. The tightness in your shoulders shouldn’t show. Instead, relax your shoulders and walk back to your seat. On your way there if you encounter the just-out-of-college kid and she hands you some assignments, sit down and take ten deep breaths. If you’re allowed to listen to music while at work, grab the opportunity to do so. Nothing can relax you more than that.

Tip # 2 – Turn It Off!

Well, this one has no sexual innuendos. We are, instead, talking about turning off your phone or at least keeping it on silent. Little would you notice, but the ‘ding’ sounding alerts can cause for more chaos in your life than you settled for. You might not realize it, but every little tiny alert sound is capable of driving you up the wall.

This is what you call irony – technology was made to make life simpler for us; not to complicate things. But instead, it has ended up making slaves out of all of us. Like expert Dr. Roberta Lee claims in her new book ‘The Superstress Solution’; you needn’t join the monastery; you could just turn off that thing for a few evening and see the difference.

Tip # 3 – The To-Do List Works

Believe it or not, something as simple as the ‘to-do’ list will help much more than you can imagine its worth. Psychologically speaking the reason behind schedules working is that it lets you believe that you’re in control.

When we receive 4 to 5 assignments, all of which are due the next week; all of us do the panic dance for a good 20 minutes before we get the better of ourselves. Break down your goals into sizeable bites then; and this should help reduce the stress that you’re feeling due to the overwhelming size of your assignments at hand.
