Know About Penile Implant Insertion Reservoir

There are many surgical procedures available for males who are unable to maintain an erection during intercourse. This disturbs their normal life, once such method for males to maintain erection and enjoy their life is Penis Implant Surgery. In this method the prosthesis consists of malleable (bendable) rods surgically implanted within the erection chambers of the penis. This will create an erection like state for the penis which helps in sexual intercourse. Diabetes, cardio vascular diseases and spinal cord injuries or any other operation creates need for Penile Implant because after these operations it is hard for some males to get an erection.

Types of Penile Implants:

  • Inflatable Prosthetics

    Inflatable Prosthetics and Reservoir positioning both contains two cylinders, a pump, a reservoir and tubing. Inflatable Prosthetics are available in two-piece or three-piece versions. In the three-piece prosthetic the cylinder is inserted into the penis and pump is placed in the scrotum and the reservoir which holds the fluid is implanted in the abdomen. In the two piece Prosthetics version the cylinders go into penis, but the pump and reservoir are implanted into the scrotum.

  • Reservoir Positioning

    This is the most complicated method of implantation. This method has the higher risk of bladder perforation if the bladder is not empty, and if there is any mistake in placement of reservoir over the fascia then it will lead to penile implantsmechanical complications. In this method the reservoir is implanted in the groin muscles, the pump is connected to the system and loose skin of scrotal between the testicles.

How does it work?

It works by pressing the pump which transfers fluid from reservoir to the cylinders located in the penis which helps fluid to fill cylinders and hence a person gets erection. There is valve at the base of the pump when a person press it erection deflates. This is not noticeable when a person is using public washroom or locker room; only a small surgical scar can be observed at the bottom of the penis where penis and scrotal sac meets.

Precautions

People have to take precautions before the surgery and tests like blood, urine and psychological analysis, medical and sexual history should also be taken care of. This surgery is usually performed by an urologist. Genitals should be shaved to avoid infection. The surgery will take normally 1 or 2 hours under general anesthesia, epidural and spinal block. A person may face pain for 4 weeks after the surgery as the device is implanted small incisions made on the scrotum. The penile implant surgery is 90 to 95 percent successful. However the ejaculation and orgasm reaching ability will be the same.

Complications

No surgery is free of complications which includes uncontrolled bleeding after surgery leads to re-operation, scar tissue formation, infection, erosion (breaking of tissue), mechanical failure which leads to re-operation. This surgery is hard for males suffering from obesity, heart disease, alcoholism, drugs overdose, diabetes, lung diseases, smoking, poor nutrition, illness, herniation etc. there are other options like oral and inject able medications which are also useful.
