What is stress?
Stress is a form of difficulty that causes emotional tension or worry. It is a state of mental or emotional strain. It is a most common type of tension that occurs due to change in the routine or because of some unforeseen situations. It is basically the result of situations that may give discomfort to the person. Stress can be in any form, it can include mental & emotional strains, suspense, excitement, fear, worry, tension or anxiety. The change in any form will result in stress, despite of good or bad. What matters more is your reaction towards the change, which will help you know your stress levels. The stress factor differs from person to person, it depends on the intensity of the change. Eg; one person may enjoy getting married while the other may find it as a stressful situation. It is all about adjusting with the change, “if you can’t change things try to accept them” is well said. Adjustment is very important to overcome stress. Stress may build up, when a person may find it difficult to cope up with the situation. There are several stress management courses that help to cope up with stressful situations.
Meditation exercise
Meditation & yoga are basic exercises that are usually followed for reducing stress levels. These exercises are carried out in calm, fresh & quiet places like gardens & parks. Usually these exercises are performed in quiet places where there is no disturbance. Initially get a comfortable position, like sitting in chair or sitting cross-legged on the floor or lying down. Close your eyes & calm down yourself, focus should be more on breathing. Expand your abdominal area by inhaling as mush air as possible through your nose. Exhale the air through your nose & relax by emptying your stomach. It is a normal kind of exercise & is very effective. At least practicing this for twenty minutes is worth it.
Autogenic training
It is a relaxation technique that is used to train & relax the mind & body. These suggestions change the thoughts in mind, by suggesting the body & mind about certain events & occurring like slower heartbeats, increased blood flow & lesser muscle tension. Go for suggestions that are appropriate for your situations.
Other general exercises include concentrating your both arms & slowly address your mind & say “My arms are very heavy” for six times. Other one is, Make yourself calm & silently say to yourself just once, “I am very quiet, & I enjoy feeling relaxed for a while”. These are some self-motivating exercises that can be termed as best stress relieving exercises. For proper meditation, proper concentration on breathing is very important. Focus should be more on relaxing the muscles.
Imagery practices
This part of exercise involves a soothing imagination that will help you to feel relaxed. Imagine as if you are on a sea shore, feel the warmth & positive energy of the sea, feel the touch of sand grains to your feet. Feel the soothing fresh air & awesome irresistible atmosphere. Keep consistency while imagining without diverting your attention from the place & mind. Feel this for 15 to 20 minutes, this will relax you & will make you feel refreshed.
Mindfulness Meditation
Mindfulness meditation is a form of meditation which includes a mental state, with calm awareness of body’s function, feelings & content of consciousness. It is different from the other forms of meditations; this mainly focuses on changing the response to stimuli rather than altering physiology. Stimuli refer to the surrounding area like noise or people present other than you. Try not to react to the stimuli. Avoid getting jumbled with the thoughts. Keep a tab on your sensations, if you feel sensations of discomfort make yourself aware. If the sensations are changing try to notice them.
These are some of the types of meditations that can be followed by people struggling with handling stress. Performing these exercises will lead you to live a healthy life.
