BOUNCING BACK – Part 1
Ever wondered what is it that characterizes the 21st century? Is it the technology or the increasing competition? Not really! The actual basic characteristics would sum up to fatigue, premature aging, excessive craving for caffeine, panic attacks and insomnia. Correct me if I’m wrong!
These features have, unfortunately, become an integral part of our lives today. We all seem to be growing old before our time. Backaches and headaches are a part of our mundane lives. Isn’t it?
If you had to call this a disorder, what would you call it? I’d call it the ‘spent’ disorder; because that’s exactly how you feel at the end of the day!
Why Do We Feel So SPENT?
Well, basically, at the bottom of all this mess is one simple fact. We weren’t designed to live the lifestyles we lead today.
We weren’t built to be sedentary creatures, stuck craning our necks poring over a computer. Neither were we designed to merely pull-on with few hours of sleep every night. Nor is living indoors all the time, with little or almost no exposure to the sunlight a normal phenomenon for us!
We’re not suggesting that everyone quits their jobs and stays back at home. But it was seen that if a person got adequate amounts of natural light, good food, a biological clock that was set in flow with the day, appropriate amounts of exercise and reduced levels of stress; he/she could be at an advantage when it comes to losing weight.
Incorporate some lifestyle changes, and it may help better the situations coming up in the future.
Smart Sleeping
A good night’s sleep is one of the most essential aspects for optimal energy levels of a person.
- The Electronic Curfew
Ensure that all your electrical appliances – television, laptop/computer, cell phone, etc – are all switched off by around 10 pm. This way you’ll give an indication to your brain (as well as, to the world) that it is time for you to sleep. - Dark Room
Even the smallest of lights in a room, while you’re sleeping, could be detrimental to the quality of sleep that you eventually end up getting. Production of the sleep-inducing hormone, melatonin, gets disrupted when it sees even the smallest blink of light. - Breathing Break
It is important for the body to understand that it is time to unwind and hit the bed. To do so, you could try taking off 5-10 minutes before you actually sleep and sit down in one corner of your room. Close your eyes; and practice some deep-breathing exercises. This method could also be used to control your hunger cravings as well.
