Avoiding Baby Name Regret
You and your hubby were blessed with a baby girl last week; and you’ve decided to name the baby ‘Ruth’. But now that you look back at it, that doesn’t seem like the name you’d want your baby to live with for the rest of your life! If that’s the situation you’re in, fret not; because you’re not alone. A lot of parents go through this dilemma. After all, naming your baby isn’t really the easiest thing to do. You are responsible for giving your child an identity that is going to last a lifetime.
If you’re in a spot wherein you’d like to give that name another shot, then we suggest you sleep over it (provided you’re getting any sleep at all). Think over the situation; and don’t take a rash decision.
If you’re sure none of it is working for you, then you might want to try some of these suggestions.
Spelt all wrong –
When almost 2/3rd of all the cards that came in for your newborn baby boy were addressed Jackson instead of Jaxen, you might realize the unconventional spelling isn’t the best idea and might cause a lot of hassles for little Jack and you.
It might not be too late for you to change the spelling; and trust us when we say, changing the spelling won’t reduce your child’s ‘cool’ level.
Innovation is the keyword –
Your first day at ‘Mommy and me’ class was disastrous. Reason – Around four other little boys are also called Jacob. That sure wouldn’t make you happy, especially if you’re the finicky types. A little re-branding can help you go a long way, if you’re stuck in a situation like this. This will help you stay happier with the name and will make your little Jacob stand out. You could turn to the last 3 alphabets for inspiration. Since Jacob ends with ‘cob’, you could try calling your baby ‘Kobe’ or ‘Colby’. You could use this name on the personalized ‘thank you’ cards that you send out to people.
Give the Middle Name some limelight time –
Many a times, the most beautiful of middle names do not get the importance that they should. But in the case of your baby, make sure that isn’t the case. Let his/her middle name take the center stage. If your little girl is called Sarah Brooke, for instance, call her Brooke at home; or David Campbell can become Campbell. Did you know this little fact – Brooke Shields, Ashton Kutcher, Sylvester Stallone; all go by their middle names? Think about it!
Use initials to jazz thing up –
This is an almost built-in option for a nickname. You could add up the initials of your child’s middle and first names; and come up with a winning combination. The combinations like JB, CJ, AJ, and MZ work beautifully.
Variation and Improvisation –
So you’re having doubts about calling her Francesca. How about calling her Frankie or Cess? If you think your little boy looks nothing like an Alexander, but you chose it because your hubby’s grand father went by the same name, then you might want to try an Alex or perhaps, Xander will work.
Falling in love all over again –
We’re sure there was a very good reason behind you choosing this name in the first place. All you have to do is remind yourself why you chose the name you did. Did you choose it because your grandmother was called the same? Remind yourself of how much you love her; and that should do the trick. Try reading up on historical characters that your baby shares his/her name with. Or watch a movie with a protagonist who goes by the same name! This might inspire you into sticking with the name.
If none of these suggestions work, you could apply for a legal change in name. Don’t worry; you won’t be the only parent on planet Earth to be taking this step. It is much more common than you believe it to be!
